Empowering Students to Achieve Their Full Potential
F rom Brain Drain to Brain Gain. Nigeria’s brightest minds are shaping the world – but their impact shouldn’t stop at our borders.
Our Reverse Brain Drain initiative connects Alumni and skilled Nigerians in the diaspora with opportunities to give back – through mentoring, knowledge transfer, investment, and innovation. Together, we can build a future where young talent thrives at home, industries grow, and ideas spark lasting change.
It’s not just about bringing people back. It’s about bringing skills, ideas, and opportunities home.
RBD
Since 2019, the Reverse Brain Drain Project has been reconnecting the global University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) community – alumni, lecturers, students, and friends – to foster academic excellence, resource sharing, and practical learning opportunities.
Aligned with the charity’s object and inspired by UNN’s motto,” RBD is helping to strengthen the university and society through knowledge transfer and tangible support.
The Reverse Brain Drain (RBD) Project is a strategic initiative designed to reinvest both human and material resources into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) – our Alma Mater – and the wider Nigerian society. By facilitating dynamic knowledge exchange and transfer between UNN alumni, lecturers, students, and friends of the university worldwide, the project supports the pursuit of academic excellence and helps preserve the prestigious reputation of UNN as a distinguished citadel of learning.
RBD is aligned with the Charity’s object – to advance education in Nigeria by facilitating access to tertiary education and providing or assisting in the provision of grants, scholarships, bursaries, and educational resources – and UNN’s motto – To restore the dignity of man,” and strives to promote pride, loyalty, and uphold the intrinsic value of the University’s degrees on a global scale.
Our Goal
To turn “brain drain” into “brain gain” by engaging skilled Nigerian professionals in the diaspora to invest their expertise, resources, and networks back into Nigeria. Through mentorship, collaborative research, knowledge transfer, and targeted development projects, we aim to strengthen local capacity, inspire innovation, and create sustainable opportunities that will empower the next generation of Nigerians to thrive at home.
Our Vision
A university environment where every student, regardless of disability, has equal opportunities to learn, participate, and succeed.

By fostering collaboration, supporting practical learning, and enriching educational resources, RBD plays a crucial role in maintaining the excellence and global stature of UNN, while contributing positively to Nigeria’s educational and societal development.
Why It Matters
Every year, Nigeria loses some of its brightest minds to opportunities abroad—a challenge known as brain drain. But this story can be rewritten.
Reverse Brain Drain (RBD) transforms this loss into a powerful advantage by connecting the expertise, resources, and global networks of Nigerians in the diaspora back to their homeland. When skilled professionals abroad share knowledge, invest in innovation, and mentor the next generation, they help drive sustainable development, create jobs, and inspire hope.
RBD is not just about bringing people back—it’s about bringing ideas, skills, and opportunities home to unlock Nigeria’s full potential.
How We Make an Impact
The project’s core activities include:
-
Engaging Alumni as Educators
We actively seek out UNN alumni who are willing to share their expertise by preparing and delivering lectures or presentations to students in their respective departments. To encourage participation, we regularly announce opportunities and send reminders via WhatsApp groups and our social media channels.
-
Knowledge Sharing Seminars
RBD organises knowledge exchange seminars that bring together members based in the UK (Lions and Lionesses) and lecturers from UNN. These seminars are held during our Annual General Meeting (AGM) or via online platforms, fostering collaboration and intellectual growth.
-
Internships at World-Class Medical Facilities
We facilitate internship placements for UNN medical students at the Human Race Specialist Medical Centre in Owerri – a world-class facility equipped with state-of-the-art medical technologies. This hands-on experience equips students with practical skills and knowledge essential to becoming top-tier healthcare professionals.
-
Collaborating with UNAA-UK and UNN Faculties
We work closely with the public, UNAA-UK members and the University’s faculties and departments to coordinate volunteer lecturers and organise seminars and lectures when volunteers are available, ensuring a seamless partnership that benefits students and staff alike.
-
Educational Resources for UNN & Beyond
Through RBD initiatives, we provide university libraries, learning resource centres, and community hubs with vital educational books and materials. In partnership with the UNN administration and both state and federal ministries of education, we collect, sort, pack, ship, and distribute textbooks across various disciplines. This initiative has delivered hundreds of textbooks to students, significantly enhancing their academic resources. In 2019, the UNAA-UK Foundation donated a substantial collection of chemistry textbooks to UNN’s Chemistry Department, empowering students to deepen their understanding and excel in the subject.
-
Engaging our community
We engage with our community through various media by sharing our programmes and activities, inspiring success stories. This initiative aims to reach a broad audience both locally and in the diaspora, encouraging more Lions and Lionesses worldwide to contribute towards sustaining quality education
