Empowering Disabled Students to Achieve Their Full Potential
D isability Support Initiative (DSI) is a dedicated project aimed at providing reasonable support to students with disabilities at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and its campuses. Our goal is to reduce the barriers students face academically and socially, ensuring they can compete on an equal footing with their non-disabled peers and thrive both in university and beyond.
Launched in 2022, DSI’s long-term commitment is building a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for students with disabilities at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and all its campuses.
As an ongoing project, it is dedicated to breaking down the barriers that limit disabled students’ full participation in academic and social life. Our mission is to reduce the impact of disability on everyday campus experiences, enabling students to compete on a level playing field with their non-disabled peers, achieve academic excellence, and graduate fully prepared to contribute meaningfully to society.
We believe that disability should never be a barrier to learning, growth, or success. Through strategic partnerships, practical interventions, and community engagement, DSI works to ensure that every student has equal access to education, resources, and opportunities.
Our Goal
Our ultimate goal is to support the University of Nigeria in establishing a “Disability Support Services” unit within the Students Affairs Department. This unit will focus exclusively on providing reasonable and sustainable support to all disabled students across UNN’s campuses, empowering them to achieve the highest possible level of independence, confidence, and self-worth.
We recognise that while some severe conditions require realistic expectations, there is potential for improvement in almost every case. By fostering inclusion and providing tailored support, we aim to give students the tools they need to contribute meaningfully to society — not out of dependence, but out of strength and capability.
Our Vision
A university environment where every student, regardless of disability, has equal opportunities to learn, participate, and succeed.
Our Vision
To remove barriers, provide targeted support, and empower students with disabilities to thrive both in their studies and beyond graduation.
